Making Incense Sticks...

In the past incense meant patchouli and sandalwood. Now, with the increased popularity of candle fragrance, incense flavors are changing. Your customers will love French Vanilla, Lavender, Plumeria, Apple Jack & Spice, and all the other wonderful candle fragrances if you make them available in incense too! For your convenience we have an Incense Making Kit with all the supplies you need!

Supplies: All supplies used in this project are available on our incense product page.

  • Incense Blending Oil
  • Incense Sticks: Natural or Colored
  • A Great Fragrance
  • Glass Dropper
  • Bottle & lid for mixing fragrance with blending oil
  • Tall Jar or Tray
  • Packaging Bags
100% fragrance oil is too strong for the incense, and will make very smokey incense! You should blend it with other oil. Use our incense blending oil to mix with your candle fragrance oils - 2-3 parts blending oil to 1 part fragrance oil. Just shake in a bottle or stir well. Do not use alcohol in place of blending oil.

There are 3 ways to saturate your incense sticks. You can soak the sticks in a tall narrow container; you can lay them in a tray such as a utencil drawer organizer, and soak them in oil; or you can lay the sticks in a long container and then use an eye dropper to saturate the stick while turning it to coat all sides.

After soaking/saturating your incense, you will need to allow them to dry for at least 48 hours. You may want to suspend the incense sticks over a jar to catch the fragrance drippings into a container for use again. They will be ready to burn and/or sell after drying for 2 days. You can use a fan to speed up the drying process, or lay the sticks in the sun. Do not place incense sticks in an oven.

These are great for selling at your shows or flea markets. You can pre-package them and tie a ribbon around them, or you can stand incense in jars and let your customers choose and bag their choice flavors. Pre-packaged incense is usually packaged in bags of 8, and sell for $1 or more per bag. That's a great profit for you, and allows you to offer bulk buys of 100 sticks or more to customers!

For a professional "store" look, design a label and print on Avery business card stock. Then just tear labels and fold over the top of your incense bag and staple. Then you can punch a hole in the label and hang on a display rack.
